I recently joined Wind River as product marketing manager for VxWorks and as an outsider and former competitor, I think there are many myths surrounding VxWorks that need to be busted. Even during my short time here at Wind River, I can clearly see these myths are well, just myths. I will be writing a series of blog entries myth busting the VxWorks story.
Myth #1: VxWorks is Dead
The untimely demise of VxWorks is a common myth that our competitors would love you to believe. In some ways, thinking VxWorks is dead is an exaggeration, but there is an impression out there that VxWorks is not a priority for Wind River and that our acquisition by Intel spells certain doom for VxWorks. Clearly this is not the case, in fact, VxWorks continues stronger than ever as the most well known and popular RTOS in the market. Here are some things to consider:- More than 250 engineers work on various VxWorks products.
- VxWorks is a product line, much more than an RTOS, that includes safety and security certified products, graphics, middleware, optimizing compilers and multicore products.
- VxWorks is a constantly growing business with more customers and more successful products.
- VxWorks roadmap is very strong for all processor platforms, Power PC, ARM, Intel, MIPS, etc.
- VxWorks continues to have the broadest partner ecosystem and corresponding hardware support. If you buy a board or platform, there’s most likely a VxWorks BSP for it more than any other operating system.
- VxWorks is completely complimentary to Intel’s strategy for its embedded products. As Intel promotes the Atom processor in the embedded market, VxWorks is a key ingredient in supporting this.
The list could go on ad nausea but I think these key points state the fact that VxWorks is a top priority for Wind River and we continue to keep it going strong. Next post, I’ll tackle Myth #2: VxWorks and SMP support!
