Chunghwa Telecom Laboratories Collaborating with Wind River for NFV Proof-of-Concept

C.AshtonWind River has long been working with major service providers on innovative NFV projects. The Wind River Titanium Cloud portfolio provides virtualization platforms that meet the intensive performance, reliability and security requirements of the world’s most demanding communications networks. One of our more recent projects included a proof-of-concept with Chunghwa Telecom Lab, the development center of Taiwan’s largest telecommunications operator, Chunghwa Telecom.

Chunghwa Telecom is looking for NFV approaches to grow revenue and reduce operational expenses. The service agility provided by NFV will allow operators to accelerate the deployments of new, value-added services, bringing new business opportunities from their subscriber base.

Chunghwa Telecom Laboratories has started evaluating  Wind River’s technologies around high performance mobile edge computing. With the Wind River Titanium Cloud platform, the team can enjoy carrier grade reliability, high performance and flexibility; they also believe they can reduce development time by 50% compared to other types of open source solutions. An additional benefit that Chunghwa can leverage from this joint PoC is the availability of solutions from industry-leading partners that have been validated through the Titanium Cloud ecosystem. The validation process within Wind River’s expansive ecosystem program guarantees interoperability with all the relevant open standards.

Wind River’s Titanium Cloud portfolio is based on open software standards including carrier grade Linux, real-time Kernel-based Virtual Machine (KVM), carrier grade plugins for OpenStack®, Data Plane Development Kit (DPDK), and accelerated virtual switching, all optimized for Intel architecture platforms. It not only provides integrated, ultrareliable, deployment-ready virtualization platforms that enable service providers to deploy virtualized services faster, at lower cost and with guaranteed uptime, but also helps operators use NFV to realize operational cost savings as they can replace traditional vertically-integrated products with decoupled, multi-vendor solutions that will allow them to achieve significant reductions in both CAPEX and OPEX.
