The Plug-in Fest is coming!

By Doug Gaff

As if we didn't already have our hands full with EclipseCon, the next event is on the horizon: the Eclipse Plug-in Fest for Embedded and Mobile Products. The inaugural Plug-in Fest was held in January last year at Symbian's offices in London, and it was a great success. This year, I'm pleased to announce that Wind River will be hosting the event in our Sunnyvale, CA office.

Like last year, we're expecting at least 20 companies and projects to participate in two days of product integration testing. In addition of many commercial Eclipse-based products from the device software development space, the projects leads from CDT and several of the DSDP projects will also be present. This event is for engineers only (although we are letting Ian come), and it's designed to diagnose and solve plug-in integration problems on-site.

Linux Foundation's Collaboration Summit

By Glenn Seiler

Today was the first day of the inaugural Linux Foundation's Collaboration Summit. In case you don’t remember the Linux Foundation was formed as merger of the Open Source Development Labs and the Free Standards Group. The Collaboration Summit represents the first face-to-face meeting of the members of this new consortium. For many members that were previously very active in the OSDL there has been a lot of anticipation and anxiety about how the new organization will represent all the Linux community – those of us in the Device Software market as well as the mainstream Enterprise market.

I have to say this first day has been a very pleasant surprise. There have been some really good panel and keynote presentations. In particular the first panel included the prominent kernel maintainers and kernel developers including Andrew Morton, James Bottomley, Chris Wright, Ted Tso and Greg KH. Mark Shuttleworth, founder of Ubuntu Linux, gave the keynote discussion.

Announcing: Wind River Real-Time Core 5.0

By Glenn Seiler

In February 2007, Wind River announced the acquisition of FSMLabs RTCore technology along with our plans to offer the technology with Wind River Linux.  Our progress on integration and our satisfaction with the technology continues to grow, and I am happy to announce that Wind River Real-Time Core 5.0 [pdf document] for Wind River Linux 1.5 is now available. Real-Time Core Technology will enable existing Wind River Linux users to achieve guaranteed real-time response for their applications and more importantly the availability of Real-Time Core enables Linux to be deployed in devices previously restricted to using an RTOS.

New Project Lead for Device Debugging

By Doug Gaff

I'm excited to announce a project leadership change in the Device Debugging (DD) sub-project of DSDP.  As voted by the DSDP PMC, Pawel Piech from Wind River Systems will take over leadership of the project. Why the change? Since the inception of DSDP in June 2005, I've been wearing two hats: PMC lead for DSDP and Project Lead for Device Debugging. I'm very pleased with what DD has accomplished over the past couple of years, but in order for DD to reach a 1.0 release and exit incubation, it needs a dedicated project lead. The growth of DSDP has far exceeded my expectations, and with additional DSDP subproject proposals coming this year, I need additional time to focus on DSDP as the PMC lead.

Support for Virginia Tech

By Doug Gaff

This will be a departure from my usual blog topics, but I think it's important to stand up for my Alma Mater right now.  Virginia Tech is where I started my career in Embedded.  I completed my BS in Electrical Engineering in '93 and my MS EE in '95.

Most of you who read this blog probably know nothing of Blacksburg, Virginia or Virginia Tech. Unfortunately, the events of April 16 will surely create a negative impression of a campus and a town that in fact represents the opposite of what students, alumni, and Blacksburg residents know to be true.

HEY APPLE!! It’s called a GLOBAL MARKET…

By John Bruggeman

WRiPod For anyone who knows me, it's no surprise that I'm a huge fan of Apple. I love the product designs, the brand, the ads, the business models, the corporate image and especially the value the company brings to my life pretty much on a daily basis. I have an entire collection of iPods because I buy every time a new model is released. Wind River's marketing team has grown accustomed to my iTunes constantly blaring through the hallways and I even gave Wind River branded iPod minis to our sales force at the end of the year as a token of my appreciation for their hard work.

What About VxWorks?

By John Bruggeman

There was quite a bit of media coverage about Wind River’s announcement last week, but if you haven’t already read about it, we acquired the intellectual property for RTLinux, the industry’s only commercially-available, hard real-time Linux technology developed by FSMLabs. You can learn more about it here.

Now while the technology we acquired will be integrated with our Linux platforms, this asset acquisition could raise bigger questions about our future commitment to VxWorks - which for the record, continues to grow and is the most widely adopted commercial real-time operating systems in the device software industry. So in an effort to eliminate any doubt or confusion, I want to make sure I address these questions directly.

Powering Out of Social Networking - Powering Down with Social Conscience

By John Bruggeman

It’s that time of year again. The time when all of the industry’s great thinkers pause for a moment of reflection and look back on the year’s significant trends, themes, events, big winners, best and worst performers and any and every other metric that can best sum up a 365-day period in a nice, neat “Top Ten List.”

I’m not sure about the other nine things, but this year it would be hard to argue that social networking was anything but THE dominant industry trend. Now I am not saying social networking was a new phenomenon this year but it seemed to be all anyone wanted to TALK about. It was EVERYWHERE. MySpace, Second Life, YouTube, Flickr, Facebook and on and on and on.

New Manager Hired for Embedded Linux Development Tools

PenguinWind River recently hired Sven Dummer to manage its line of Eclipse-based Wind River Workbench tools for embedded Linux developers. According to Linuxdevices.com, Sven believes strongly in the open source model: "Eclipse, Linux, and GNU is a kind of dream team for me, and Workbench combines all this, with a focus more on the commercial side."
