VxWorks helping commercial spaceflight become a reality

By Bill Graham

Graham_lg The successful launch of the SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket (I should really say "launch vehicle") today was 400px-SpaceX_Dragon another great step for commercial spaceflight. The Falcon 9 has already successfully reached orbit in June 2010, but at that time it didn't have a payload. This latest launch is the first to carry SpaceX Dragon capsule which was successfully recovered after the flight.

SpaceX  launch vehicles are the epitome of  Commercial-Off-The-Shelf (COTS) solutions. By successfully building, testing and launching commercial spaceflight vehicles they are demonstrating that COTS solutions are not only cheaper to produce but can be equally successful and achieve desired program goals.

Wind River has been proudly part of many space programs in the past and we're happy to be part of the SpaceX Falcon 9 program. VxWorks, in particular, has been part of the NASA's Mars Lander program and Ares X-1, Italy's CIRA FTB-1 unmanned space vehicle, and ESA's EGNOS satellite system (to name a few). For the Falcon 9, VxWorks provides the RTOS platform for the flight control system, the rocket launch control and the remote management operations. SpaceX is leveraging our COTS solutions to build their own commercial solution for space flight. We congratulate the SpaceX team on their success today.
