You run a business. Things are going well. You have a good brand. People like your product. But the business is not growing like it used to. Remember the good old days when your product was “hot.” You felt like a rock star. The buzz was all about you. But lately the bloom of youth has matured and it feels like the magic has moved on. But does it have to be that way?
I have had the pleasure of attending Embedded World in Nuremberg this week and have found people who are rekindling that youthful glow by looking at the Internet of Things (IoT) to reinvent their business. It seems like everyone is thinking of ways to leverage information for business transformation. The problem is they don’t know where to begin. When you look at IoT as a whole it can be overwhelming.
Here’s my advice to those businesses wanting to again find those days where growth was something they measured in double digits:
- Keep it simple. It’s easy to want to get all the benefits of IoT in one step. Resist that urge. Instead, think of a simple way IoT could have an impact on your business and generate revenue within this calendar year, maybe even a quarter. Yes, its been a while since you had a positive ROI in a quarter hasn’t it? Well you can do it. Just keep it simple. Identify one piece of information that you can use now to start a business transformation. Just think, if I only knew … I could … And that would mean … to my business.
- Leverage ready to go technology. Don’t waste time in R&D coming up with the “best” solution. Grab stuff that is ready to go and use it. There’s time later to make it over into something else but revenue is waiting for you now, don’t delay.
- Find a company that is ready to partner with you as you start on your IoT journey. I hope you’ll find that company is Wind River. We’ve worked hard so you don’t have to. Our technology and services in our Wind River Helix portfolio can get you started and provide all the help you need along the way.
