Wind River Tops Global Embedded Software Market Once Again

Uniquely positioned within the embedded industry, Wind River boasts a comprehensive edge-to-cloud-software portfolio designed to help critical infrastructure companies realize the full potential of IoT and make the most of the emergent software-defined world. On the operating system front, this includes real-time operating system (RTOS) VxWorks, which offers a feature-rich development environment with the uncompromising performance, safety and security required for mission-critical and safety-mandated applications. It also includes open source innovation leadership with Wind River Linux, which helps developers speed build cycles by more than 30 percent, while reducing production and maintenance costs by as much as 60 percent.

Maintaining our longstanding leadership position in the global embedded software market, Wind River topped both the RTOS and commercial Linux segments for another consecutive year in VDC’s latest OS report, “The Global Market for IoT & Embedded Operating Systems.”

The report covers the global market for commercially available RTOSes, non-real-time operating systems and other related bundled products and services. According to the latest findings from VDC Research, Wind River commanded a combined 27.6% of total IoT and embedded OS revenue share, with approximately 22.6% and 53.4% revenue share in the RTOS and commercial Linux markets, respectively. Proud to note that this is the ninth year running we have led the commercial embedded Linux market with our Wind River Linux platform and its related services.

According to VDC Research Analyst Roy Murdock, “The rapidly shifting IoT and embedded OS market requires vendors to push the pace of change. Wind River’s enduring leadership in the embedded operating system market is a testament to its constant innovation and investment in its product portfolio.”

VDC covers our focus on simplifying and streamlining our technology portfolio over the last year. This strategy includes collapsing our five VxWorks industry profiles into VxWorks Plus and rolling our four different Wind River Linux development profiles into the core code, which is now freely available. The report also highlights AXON Predict Analytics for VxWorks, our Greenwave offering of real-time advanced visual edge analytics integrated with VxWorks.

I’m extremely proud of our perennial position as the top global embedded software provider, reflecting the compelling value of our proven products and services. As one of the VDC report’s key findings was that IoT and embedded engineers ranked “Reliability/Stability” as the most important characteristic when selecting a primary OS, I’m confident that our nearly four-decade heritage of extreme reliability will sustain our market leadership throughout 2018 and beyond. After all, when it matters, it runs on Wind River.
